June 1 2016 Class

I did a class on June 1st focused on Tips and Techniques using Clean and Simple Cards.  I had so much fun creating the cards for this class.  I started the class talking about Trends in Card making with examples for many of the trends.  The trends and samples are below.

Trends in Card making:

CASE (Create and Share Everything) – this is so you can share ideas and inspire others to create in their own style.  You can copy the card someone else makes as long as you give them credit for their design.  What most people do is take a few ideas and then add their own touch or totally change the card only using one color, the layout, or one element.

This card will look familiar as I made one similar to this
for my sister's birthday in March.  I CASE'd this card
with very few changes from the original designed by
Brandi Cox.  You can see this card on Brandi's
YouTube site.  She did 10 cards in 20 minutes using
primarily one stamp set.

This is the inside of the card.

Mood Boards or Challenges – there are many groups that have weekly or monthly challenges; they are given a sketch to use, colors to use, or specific themes they must include.  Some use a mood board and challenge you to create a card based on the inspiration of the mood board.

These are samples of Mood Boards from Stamp Nation.
Are you inspired to create some cards?

CAS (Clean and Simple Cards) – this has become more popular over the last year.  Often it is using white on white cardstock with a simple pattern or sentiment.  Another way is to make a flat card with no layers.

I made this card in a class given by Rebecca Fellows, she
designed this card.  It is one of the most clean and simple
cards I have made and I love it.

Watercolor – this has been a trend for about 2 years and continues to grow in popularity.

This is another card made in a class taught by
Rebecca Fellows and the card was designed by
her.  This watercolor technique was interesting.
On watercolor paper, you sponge SU Mint Macaron
over the whole piece.  Then sponge on SU Bermuda
Bay around the edge and in a few other spots.  Take
the stamp and spritz it with water.  Stamp it on the
watercolor paper.  Dry with a heat tool and watch
the magic.  You will also see another watercolor technique
on one of the cards for the class below.
Special Note:  I will be giving this card to my great nephew
Jaiden in June for his birthday.  He's entering the teen years.

Color book style cards – the adult color book trend is now moving to card making.  It is generally done in black and white or another dark color and white with a pop of color suggesting the recipient color in the card.

I CASE'd this card from Catherine Pooler.   I changed
up the color pop and sentiment.  I also laid out
the flowers and leaves differently.  I love this technique and want
to experiment and make more.  So fun.

Foil is back – Foil is used as an accent to the card.  You can get it in a variety of colors.

I have been stamping for almost 30 years
and this is the second time foil has made
a comeback in the trend category.  On this
card I used "red" tape (doubled sided) on the
edge of each side of the card and laid
iridescent foil on top of that for the foil look.
This card is my design and also includes
using stencils and rainbow/ombre colors.

Note:  I watched two YouTube videos on using
foil today that are awesome.  Check out Gina K on
Stamp TV and Stacey on Scrapbooking Made Simple.  They
both had great ideas and techniques.

Copper is the color this year – ink, embossing powder, foil, etc.

I used copper three different ways; the background
paper, stamped and embossed the corner collage, and
die cut the butterfly, added versamark ink and embossed
with Copper embossing powder which gave a
slightly different look that the corner stamp.

Ombre colors are back or using rainbow colors in an ombre effect.

This is shown in the foil sample card above and the
die cut card below.

Die Cuts continue to grow in popularity and styles; words have been the big trend this last year.

The word friend is die cut and combined with
stamped words Happy Birthday.  This is becoming a
trend within a trend to combine die cut words with
stamped words.  This also shows the ombre look.

Punch Boards continue to be popular and new styles keep coming out.

Gift Box

Top of the Gift Box, it hooks with a punch
included on the Gift Box Board.  I made this box
as a sample.

You can see two of the different sizes of gift
boxes you can make.  The green box is the largest.
The black and white box is a medium size.

The flower on this gift box has been water colored.
This was done with a blender pen and ink pad.
This box was made in a class given by Rebecca Fellows
and is her design.

Envelope Board

These are A-2 size envelopes.  You can make
a variety of sizes from the very small 2 x 2 to
larger size envelopes, including square envelopes.

This envelope was made with double-sided paper.

The front of both envelopes.

This was made with single sided paper.

Creative ways to use stencils in card making, including making your own stencils.

Stencils were used in the Foil and Die Cut sample cards.
I made a stencil using a number of butterfly dies.  When I
took photos it didn't show well.  I will make a card soon
using the stencil and post it on this blog.

Creative ways to use patterned paper in card making is making a comeback.

I CASE'd this card from one Catherine Pooler
made on Stamp Nation.  This is just one way
all the designers and members used patterned paper during the
Patterned Paper class.  If you aren't a member
of Stamp Nation, think about joining.  It is
a great resource for new ideas, techniques, and
having a diverse group of card makers with whom to
design and share your paper art.

Using sketches for card design and challenges is growing in popularity; many people are making their own sketches.

You can find many sketches and
sketch challenges on Pinterest.   The
Butterfly inspiration card below was originally made
from a sketch challenge.  See the sketch photo here.

Now, the actual cards made in the class.  There were two cards made; a Father's Day card and a Butterfly card.  Both cards were CASE'd and are Clean and Simple.  I will show you the inspiration card that was CASE'd and the sample cards to inspire the participants.

Father's Day Card, a Clean and Simple (CAS) card:

  Inspiration Card

This card came from a class taught by Rebecca Fellows.
She is amazing and I recommend you follow her on Pinterest
and Facebook.  This is a birthday card and I changed that
plus the colors and layout of the Washi Tape.  See samples below.

  Sample Cards:

All cards are A-2 using a side fold 5 1/2 x 8 1/2
SU Whisper White thick cardstock scored at 4 1/4.
The front panel is SU Whisper White Thin
cardstock, 4 x 5 1/4 and is
popped up using SU dimensionals.

On this card, I used SU Mossy Meadow ink, cardstock
and Washi Tape along with silver and black Washi Tape.
The Sentiment used on the front of all the Father's Day cards
is from SU The Wilderness Awaits stamp set.
The sequins are SU Neutrals sequins.

This is the inside of the card.  The Sentiment
used on all Father's Day cards is from the SU May 2016
Paper Pumpkin Kit.  The stars are punched out
with SU Itty Bitty Accents Punch (R)

This card is simple and done in black and silver. The
sequins are SU Neutrals sequins.

This shows how to decorate the envelope; also see
the Inspiration card for another envelope design.

This sample is done using SU Blackberry Bliss ink,
cardstock, and Washi Tape.  I also used Gold Washi
Tape and Gold Glitter paper.

This is the inside of the card.  The hearts are punched
out using SU Itty Bitty Accents Punches. (R)  The
sequins are SU In Color 2014-16 sequins

  Alternative to Father's Day card:

This sample was created for those who didn't want
to make a Father's Day card.  It also gave
a different look that could be used in the future.

The Washi Tape is using random bright colors that
had similar colors to either Bermuda Bay or Melon Mambo.
I used SU Bermuda Bay and SU Melon Mambo ink and
cardstock; SU Brights sequins, and SU Pearl Jewels.

The hearts and flowers were punched out using
SU Itty Bitty Accents Punches (R) using Melon
Mambo cardstock.  The sentiment on the front are
from SOA All About You stamp set.  The sentiment
on the inside of the card is from the SOA Enchanted
Garden stamp set.  Both are stamped in
SU Bermuda Bay ink.

  Butterfly Cards:

  Inspiration Card:

This was CASE'd from Pinterest, Vicky Hayes is the
designer and she created the card based on a Sketch
Challenge.  I added the Watercolor element to the top half of
the card and included the sentiment there.  I also added
sequins or rhinestones.  I gave examples with the center
butterfly popped up on some and flat on others.  I also changed up the colors.

  Sample Cards:

All cards are A-2 using a top fold 4 1/2 x 11
SU Whisper White thick cardstock scored at 5 1/2.
The front panel is watercolor paper 4 x 5 1/4 and is
popped up using SU dimensionals.  I made
a template to punch out the butterflies in the front panel.

Butterfly Template

One the top are masking paper butterflies
to push through the punched out butterflies
onto the watercolor paper front panel.
The masks are used as guides to punch
out the butterflies on the front panel.  This
really helps with having the butterflies
aligned.  Figuring this out once, was enough.
During the class it helped the participants and
moved the class along faster.
