Cool Treats Birthday Card

It was my niece's (Shelby) birthday last week.  For a year now, she has told me how much she loves the ice cream cards I've made.  The ice cream cards are made using the Cool Treats stamp set and the Frozen Treats Thinlits.  I also have been using up the retired DSP from the 2017 Occasions Catalog.  So, I decided it was time she received an ice cream card for her birthday.

I am so sad that my stash of the 2017 DSP is almost gone 

and you can create cute "Cool Treats" cards using

other DSP; like the Picture Perfect Party

and Tutti-frutti in the 2018 Occasions Catalog,

or many of the DSP's in the Annual Catalog (too many to list).

Birthday Cards

Well, I didn't get the alternative Paper Pumpkin cards done for my blog today.  Check back on Monday.  So instead, I decided to post the Perennial Birthday Kit and the cards that come with it.  It is an awesome kit with a box to hold all the birthday cards you make to give people throughout the year.

 Here is the box closed with the four cards you

can make.  You can also create alternative

cards with this kit as well.  Look for some

in future posts.

Here, the box is open so you can see there is a

card for each month.  Each card has the days

of the month and you can list who has a 

birthday on that date and make a card

ahead of time.  I love this box and the set so

much I am thinking of getting a second one.

December Paper Pumpkin Cards

When I opened my December Paper Pumpkin kit, I was pleasantly surprised.  Usually the December kit is about the New Year.  In the past that has included a journal and a calendar.  This year it was beautiful floral and butterfly cards, using one of my favorites, glimmer paper.  I love these cards and hope you enjoy them too.

I will be playing with these cards to create some alternative projects to share with you.  Check back on Friday or Monday to see them.

18th Birthday Card - three fold card technique

I love creating scenes on cards; it is something I have done for over 25 years.  Stampin' Up has many stamps that can create beautiful scenes for card that are ageless and genderless.  I like that.  With this technique, you can create any season card using different stamps that work for the season.  I have all kinds of ideas, including a Christmas card.  I hope this gets your creative juices flowing.

This is a card I made for my husband's great-niece who was turning 18.  She loves nature, is an individual thinker, and cares for animals and humans alike.  So, I had seen a technique to make a three fold card which also created a scene.  So, I decided to use this technique to create this 18th birthday card.  I hope you like it.

Dancing by the Sea Card

Paper used:  Whisper White Thick, 8 1/2 by 11, card base; Wood Textures Designer Series Paper (DSP), for beach chairs; and Whisper White medium envelope

Stamps used:  Beautiful You - Dancing Woman;

Eastern Beauty - "life is beautiful" sentiment on the front; 

Number of Years - top sentiment on inside of card;

Butterfly Basics - Happy Birthday on inside of card; and 

High Tide - front of the card and first inside layer for the beach, the sea, and the seabirds.

Inks used:  Crumb Cake and Soft Suede for the beach and beach grass;

Early Espresso for front sentiment, dancing woman, and Happy Birthday on inside of card;

Pool Party and Bermuda Bay for the sea and Bermuda Bay only for top inside sentiment;

Soft Sky and Marina Mist for the sponged sky; and 

Basic Black Archival for the seabirds.

Other Tools:  Layering Oval Framelits for the cutout on the front of the card; and

Seasonal Layers Thinlits for the beach chairs

I am showing this photo first so you have an idea of 

what the card is suppose to look like.

Step One:  Using a scoring tool, score the 8 1/2 by 11 Whisper White Thick

cardstock at 4 1/4 down the length of the cardstock.  Then turn the cardstock

and score at 5 1/2 across the width of the cardstock.  Turn the cardstock 

lengthwise again.  You will see the cardstock has four sections.  You

will now cut out the top left section so you have three sections

as shown above in the photo.  Set that piece aside to use for another card.

Fold down and burnish the top right section,

this will be the first inside layer.  Fold over and burnish the bottom

left section and this is the front layer.  Lightly mark this layer with

a pencil.  This is so you know which section you will cut out the oval frame.

Lay the card down on the Big Shot making sure you will only be cutting

through the front layer.  Cut out the oval frame.  Set aside the oval to use 

on another card.

With the card folded so the oval frame is open on the 

first inside layer, lightly mark in pencil the top, bottom, 

and both sides of the oval on the first layer.  This

gives you the boundary for creating the scene you

want to have show on the front of the card.

Now, to create the scene.

Step Two:  Open up the card so you can stamp on the front of the 

card.  You will create the beach only for the front.

Using the long beach stamp with the chair insert in it,

stamp the beach with Crumb Cake, sometimes 

stamping off for lighter shades.  Go up on the bottom

of the oval.  Now, using the small beach stamp and 

Soft Suede ink stamp randomly to add depth to the 

beach.  You will want to test to see if you need to 

stamp off so the beach isn't too dark.  I played with 

this on scrap paper until I found the combination

I liked.  Using the beach grass stamp and Soft Suede,

randomly stamp the beach grass.  Again test to see

what you like.

Step Three:  Using the Seasonal Layer Beach Chair die, cut out

two chairs on the Wood Textures DSP.  Pick the

color you like, there is a great variety.  I actually

cut out a number of chairs to see which one I liked

for the scene.  Lay the Beach Chair on the front 

covering up the hole for the chair.  The stamp the 

sentiment on the front using Early Espresso ink.  

Don't adhere the Beach Chair yet.  Turn to the first 

inside layer.

Step Four:  You are going to want to fold back the front layer

of the card and flatten the first layer so you can stamp

the scene without getting anything on the other

two layers.

As you stamp, you may want to stop and check to

see what is showing through the oval frame.  

Create the beach like you did on the front of the card.

Then using the water stamp, first stamp with Pool

Party ink, being random and stamping off so you have

some white spaces and different shades of water.

Then stamp with Bermuda Bay, definitely stamping 

off until you create the sea you like. You may want

to go back over it with Pool Party again.  I played with 

this on scrap paper until I got the look I liked.

Next you will create the sky using a sponge dauber with 

Soft Sky first.  You can create texture and color variation

by going lighter or heavier with the dauber.  Always start off 

the edge of the cardstock so you have a more blended look.  Have

paper under the card to keep the edges clean.  Leave some 

white spaces here as well.  Then use Marina Mist very

sparingly to add depth to the sky.  Again, I played on scrap paper

until I liked the combination for the sky.

Once you like your scene, then stamp the dancing woman

in Early Espresso.  Note, she will be close to the bottom and 

won't fully show through the oval frame.

Then in Basic Black Archival ink, stamp the seabirds in the sky.

I angled it up slightly.

Step Five:  Lay the Beach Chair on the inside scene, don't 

adhere yet.  Close the front of the card to see if

it aligns with the front beach chair.  Once you have

both Beach Chairs where you like them, adhere with 

Tombow glue to allow you to move around.  On the

Beach Chair for the front, do not put glue on part

of the Beach Chair that will be over the oval frame

as it will glue the card shut.  Eek, I almost did that.

Almost done.

Step Six:  You can choose whether you want to stamp the 

top of the inside layer or not.  Remember,

to use colors that won't show through on the

scene which is on the other side of the section.

I did it because visually it looked better to me.

Otherwise, the bottom inside layer would have

been very busy.

This is the bottom inside layer with the sentiment

stamped in Early Espresso.

Step Seven:  Here is the envelope and finished card;  I would 

recommend doing the envelope at the same time you

are creating the beach for the scene on the front and inside.

You could also add Happy Birthday if you wanted to the 

envelope.  Have fun and make the card your own.

Various Birthday Cards

This post will just have different photos of  different birthday cards to give you other ideas.  There will not be any directions or comments.  If you want more information, please contact me.

Birthday Fun Class

I am doing a series of monthly classes focused on different themes and techniques.  In July, I held a class focused on birthdays using new stamp sets and tools from the Stampin' Up Annual Catalog.  So, here are the three cards from the class.  The next class is Color, Color, Color where you will learn different techniques using an Aqua Painter, a Blender Pen, and Sponging and Blending.  The class is August 19 from 11am to 1 pm or August 24 from 7 to 9 pm.  The cost is $8 for 3 cards.  If you live in the Salt Lake City area and want to attend future classes, please contact me.

Happy Birthday Balloon Card

This card was inspired by Dawn Griffin, an awesome 

SU Demonstrator and artist.  I did change her design 

slightly using both balloons and circles, not just circles.

I added the shadow effect to the sentiment.  I added

the balloon embellishment.  The layout is all Dawn's.

Thanks for the inspiration.

 

This card can be used for anyone, it is ageless and

doesn't scream any gender.  That is what I love about it.

The card base is Night of Navy.  The banner is 

Daffodil Delight stamped in the same color ink with 

confetti from Happy Birthday Gorgeous, and 

punched with the Triple Banner Punch.

The top panel is backed by Whisper White

 and topped with Real Red.  The balloons and 

circles are punched out using the same colors. The punches

used are the Balloon Bouquet punch and the 3/4 and 1 inch

circle punches. The Whisper White balloons are 

stamped in Real Red using the Happy Birthday

Gorgeous Stamp Set.  The balloons and circles are

randomly adhered using Tombow glue.  

The balloon strings are hand drawn using the Basic Black Marker.

The Daffodil Delight balloon

on the Night of Navy balloon at the bottom is 

one of the Balloon Honeycomb Embellishments.  This

should be added last to the front of the card.

The sentiment is die cut using the Happy Birthday

Thinlit.  It is cut in Whisper White and Night of Navy

cardstock.  The Whisper White is cut out of the 

layer on the front panel as no one sees anything but the edge.

The Night of Navy is adhered to the Multipurpose 

Adhesive sheet and then die cut.  This will make it 

easier to adhere the sentiment to the card.  Using the 

Fine Tip Glue Pen lightly add to the Whisper White 

Happy Birthday and adhere it to the Night of Navy 

Happy Birthday, slightly off to give a shadow effect.

Then peel of the adhesive backing from the Night of Navy

and adhere to the front of the card.

This is the inside of the card.  It is stamped using

the Happy Birthday Gorgeous Stamp Set.  Again,

using Real Red, Night of Navy, and Daffodil Delight

inks.  This same pattern of the balloons is used on 

the envelope below.

This is the envelope and card together.

Birthday Girl Card

This is such a sweet card for a little girl.  The 

card base is Sweet Sugarplum.  The front layers and 

the inside layers are Rich Razzleberry and Blushing Bride.

The balloons are in Whisper White, Sweet Sugarplum,

 and Blushing Bride punched out with the Balloon

Bouquet Punch.  The are stamped with 

Happy Birthday Gorgeous Stamp Set.  The 

Blushing Bride and Sweet Sugarplum balloons

are edged with a sponge dauber in the same ink

to highlight them. The strings are stamped

in Basic Black Archival ink.

The main layer is made up of two layers.  The first is 

the girl with the cupcakes which is cut out using a

Layering Oval Framelits from the Birthday Memories

Designer Series Paper.  The girl is 

also cut out using the Birthday Friends Framelits.  

The little girl should be set aside.  The next layer

is a Rich Razzleberry back border, cut out with a

scalloped Layering Oval Framelits, cut 2.

Cut one in half lengthwise and one in half widthwise.  The 

lengthwise sides should be placed on the sides of the DSP oval 

  The widthwise are placed on the top 

and bottom of the same oval to create a full border.

    Once the back border has been added to the oval of DSP, then using 

dimensionals, add the girl back in the middle of the DSP.

This is the inside of the card and is repeated on 

the envelope below.  The sentiment is stamped

in Rich Razzleberry as is the Hooray Balloon.  The

stamp sets used are Birthday Delivery and 

Happy Birthday Gorgeous.

This is the envelope and card together.

 Happy Birthday Gorgeous Card

This card was inspired by Brian King, another

inspiring SU Demonstrator.  He does very simple 

cards and I took his idea and added to his design. 

I changed the colors and layout,

plus I did the sentiment differently.

The card base is in Flirty Flamingo and is a

4 1/4 by 11 card, scored at 5 1/2 with a top fold.

There is a 4 by 5 1/4 Flirty Flamingo panel

that is embossed with the Petals Burst embossing folder. 

It is popped up using dimensionals.

The next is Basic Black border, 3 7/8 by 5 1/8.  Do

not add the Whisper White layer (3 3/4 by 5) until

you have stamped the flowers and leaves and some

go off the edge.

On a small piece of  Powder Pink cardstock,

stamp Happy Birthday

(from Happy Birthday Gorgeous Stamp Set)

in Flirty Flamingo. Punch it out with the 

Pretty Label Punch.  Punch out two Basic

Black labels with the same punch.  Again, 

cutting one in half lengthwise and one in half

widthwise.  Adhere the lengthwise black layers

to the Happy Birthday label, on the top and bottom.

Then adhere the widthwise halves to the sides of the 

label to create a full border.  Add dimensionals to the 

back of the label but do not remove the protective pieces.

Lay the Happy Birthday Label in the middle of the Whisper 

White front layer.  I used an oval framelit that was 

slightly larger than the label to lightly draw an 

outline to use as a guide for the placement of 

the flowers and leaves.  Remove the label and set aside.

First stamp the outline stamps of the flowers and 

leaves in Basic Gray Archival.  Start with the 

largest flowers first.  Stamp and create the oval

wreath to your taste.  Once you've stamped the 

outline stamps.  Then using the solid stamps, 

stamp in the color you want for the flowers and 

leaves.  I used Flirty Flamingo, Peek-A-Boo Peach, Daffodil 

Delight, and Powder Pink for the flowers.  I used Pear

Pizzazz, Wild Wasabi, and Old Olive for the leaves.

Once you have finished stamping, then adhere the 

Whisper White layer to the Basic Black layer.  Add

dimensionals to the back of Black layer and adhere to 

the front of the card.  Add the Happy Birthday

Label to the front of the card now.

This is the inside of the card.  The sentiment is from

the Colorful Seasons Stamp Set and stamped

in Flirty Flamingo.  Stamp the flowers and leaves

before you adhere this layer to the card base.  Also

stamp the envelope at this time in the same pattern.

Here is the envelope and card together.  I do 

love this card.  It is cheerful and so beautiful.  I hope

you like it too.
